Norton Scholarship
TONY & MARTHA NORTON MEMORIAL
SCHOLARSHIP FUND
______________________________________________________________________________________
Within her will, Martha H. Norton outlined her desire to establish a perpetual endowment fund at North Idaho College. The endowment is to be used for the benefit of graduates of the Silver Valley.
Melvin Norton came to Mullan from Hamilton, Montana. He worked in the Gold Hunter and Morning Mines. While staying at the Anderson Boarding House, he met Martha Herlin. They were married on July 27, 1925 in Wallace, Idaho. They lived over 50 years on Dewey Street in Mullan. They were known as Mr. & Mrs. Tony by all the neighborhood children. There always seemed to be a piece of licorice, a cookie, or a patch for a flat bicycle tire.
Tony and Martha both felt that education was the most important part of a person's life. For the childless couple who had nothing to gain, they unselfishly left the precious gift of education to many students who would not have had the opportunity to further their education without a scholarship.
